description

Athens has been the capital of Greece since 1834 and the country’s largest and most populous city. It is located in Attica, in eastern Central Greece. One of the oldest cities in the world, it was named after Athena, the goddess of wisdom and daughter of Zeus, with its recorded history reaching as far as 3,200 BC. She was the patroness of the city and in fact the Parthenon temple on the Acropolis is dedicated to her.

Athens is the warmest city in continental Europe and according to the National Meteorological Service the Athens Basin is also the warmest region of the country with an average annual temperature of 19.8°C. The main feature of the Athenian climate is the alternation of long hot and dry summers and mild, wet winters. With an average annual rainfall of 433.1 mm, rains occur between the months of October and April. July and August are the driest months, with storms infrequent, once or twice a month.
